Aftermath

The Caribbean is assessing the devastation wrought by Hurricane Melissa.

Yesterday, Melissa swept through the Bahamas and Bermuda as a Category 1, causing minimal damage before heading out to sea to dissipate; the Northeast U.S. could see heavy rain in Melissa’s wake.

Now, relief efforts are underway. Wednesday, the U.S. State Department deployed emergency response teams to affected areas to “determine what assistance is needed.”

“[If] one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,’ but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.”

WORLD NEWS

So Far, Soy Good

Uncle Sam and China are on friendlier terms after President Trump’s face-to-face with President Xi yesterday.

The two struck a trade deal after a nearly two-hour meeting in South Korea. The U.S. will cut tariffs on Chinese imports to 47% (down from its peak of 145%); in exchange, China will resume purchasing American soybeans, pause export limits on rare earth minerals (restrictions that threatened supply chains of fighter jets and phones), and cooperate on stopping the flow of fentanyl precursor chemicals into the U.S.

Trump said the “truly great” meeting was “a 12” out of 10; Xi said the two countries “can still find ways to thrive side by side” despite normal “friction.”

After the meeting, Treasury Secretary Bessent said the U.S. got Chinese approval for TikTok’s sale to a group of mostly American investors.

ECONOMY

Stacks and Cuts

Wall Street’s serving up another round of record-breaking earnings.

Nvidia just became the first company ever to hit a $5T market cap, fueled by ever-surging demand for its AI processing chips. The company hit $4T only three months ago and $3T last year.

Other corporate heavyweights are also cashing in:

But not everyone is counting stacks. Amazon’s preparing cuts of up to 30,000 corporate jobs, UPS has axed 48,000 this year, and many other companies—including Target and Paramount Skydance—have announced large-scale layoffs.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Massive wealth gains could be here today and gone tomorrow. Don’t let economic news determine your mood, win your heart’s affection, or steal your Kingdom focus.

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

IN OTHER BREWS…

President Trump is reviving nuclear weapons testing. Minutes before yesterday’s meeting with Chinese President Xi, he directed the U.S. military to immediately resume testing nuclear weapons after a 33-year pause. The surprise announcement—made aboard Marine One—noted that the Pentagon would test the U.S. nuclear arsenal on an “equal basis” with other nuclear powers.

A former Illinois sheriff’s deputy has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Sonya Massey. The former officer (a 31-year-old White man) fatally shot Massey (a Black woman suffering from mental illness and holding a pot of hot water) last June while responding to a distress call at her Springfield, Illinois, home.

The Fed whipped out its shears again. The central bank cut interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday—its second straight reduction as job growth continues to slow. Rates dropped below the 4% mark for the first time since 2022, but Chair Jerome Powell cast doubt on whether another cut would be coming in December.

French police have arrested five more Louvre heist suspects. One of the detainees was allegedly among the four thieves who nabbed France’s crown jewels during the daylight heist—the other four played an unknown role. The prosecutor warned that the gems of “incalculable” worth are “unsellable” and urged thieves to return them. A team of 100 investigators remains on the case.

Protests erupted in Brazil Wednesday after a police raid on a drug gang left at least 121 dead in Rio de Janeiro. Bereaved families condemned “executions” by the police, while the government celebrated a successful op against a massive crime organization. Meanwhile in Sudan, paramilitary forces (fighting for power since 2023) killed hundreds after seizing the Sudanese army’s last stronghold in Darfur.
