A nuclear-capable bomber crashed at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert Monday, killing eight crew members.

The aircraft went down around 11:20 a.m., shortly after takeoff, sending black smoke over Kern County. All eight aboard (three more than a B-52’s typical crew of five, and a mix of military, government-employed civilians, and contractors) died. The Air Force said the crash was “not survivable.”

The bomber has been in service since 1955 and was recently used in operations against Iran. Edwards has reopened, though officials stood down on operations through Tuesday; the cause is under investigation and could take months to determine. 

The incident came a day after two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killing all six aboard, including American singer and comedian Oliver Tree, who was on a world tour.

Ukraine and Iran are the talk of Évian-les-Bains.

Heads of state from seven major economies (plus the E.U. and some invited guests) gathered in the French lakeside town Monday for their three-day summit. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy attended as Russian missiles struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a ~1,000-year-old Orthodox monastery, killing 11 and injuring dozens. Ukraine retaliated yesterday, sending drones to a Moscow oil refinery.

FBI and law enforcement officials disrupted an alleged plot targeting the White House’s UFC Freedom 250 event Sunday. 

The cage-fighting match held on the South Lawn to celebrate America’s 250th, and President Trump’s 80th birthday, drew an estimated 4,300 attendees. 

As of yesterday, investigators had arrested five people following a multi-state operation and had also identified 23 people who allegedly discussed the attack through Signal chats. Sources say the plot involved flying explosive drones into nearby buildings to trigger a mass evacuation, positioning snipers to target the fleeing crowd, then storming the White House gate in a “second wave.”  

Law enforcement was tipped off to the threat on June 10, four days before the event. FBI Director Kash Patel thanked the FBI, DOJ, and law enforcement partners for stopping the “planned attacks” cold.

Friday, three days after launching, Uncle Sam directed Anthropic to restrict all foreign nationals from accessing the super-powered-but-supposedly-safeguarded new AI models for security reasons (not technically enforceable), forcing the company to disable both entirely. Anthropic called it a “misunderstanding”; officials head to the White House Monday to discuss the suspension.

Cape Verde didn’t get the underdog memo. In the island nation’s World Cup debut Monday, its 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha stonewalled seven Spanish shots on goal, marking a historic 0-0 draw and the 2026 tournament’s first major upset. Cape Verde is ranked 67th internationally, while four-time European champion Spain is ranked #2. All four Group H teams have one point after matchday one.

Fox Corp has entered the Living Room Battles, acquiring Roku for $22B. CEO Lachlan Murdoch locked in his biggest deal yet: gaining Roku’s distribution infrastructure, which pipes content (think: Netflix, YouTube, etc.) into 100M+ homes. It gives Fox streams of streaming revenue beyond its own content, but stock dropped 15% on the news as investors questioned the hefty price tag.

Confirmed deaths from the Ebola virus have risen to 181. In one of the largest daily jumps, 72 new cases in a 24-hour period were reported Sunday, bringing the total confirmed case count to 782, but officials expect the scale is much larger; contact tracing coverage has plummeted to 56% due to community resistance and local conflict hampering response efforts.

Wimbledon will welcome back Williams-Williams. Yesterday, Serena and Venus landed a doubles wild card to play on Britain’s famous grass courts starting June 29, where they’ve won six times as partners. It will be Serena’s first Wimbledon since 2022, and Venus’ since 2023. A win would set the record for oldest combined age (90) of a Grand Slam-winning duo.
