Shots Fired at Correspondent’s Dinner
A lone gunman rushed the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner Saturday night, firing shots in the lobby of the Washington Hilton hotel.
The suspect ran past Secret Service security barricades, shooting one agent in his bulletproof vest before being tackled outside the event ballroom. Agents covered President Trump on stage, then escorted him, First Lady Melania, and cabinet members to safety, while guests took cover under tables.
The agent who was shot has been released from the hospital; no one else was injured.
Trump praised law enforcement’s quick response and suggested the event may resume later that night, before officials announced it was scrapped and will be rescheduled within 30 days. The suspect, a 31-year-old man, is expected in court today. Acting AG Blanche said preliminary reports suggest he was “likely” targeting President Trump.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Be quick to point to God and give him the credit for your hope, strength, and love during times dominated by uncertainty and fear. Even in the midst of chaos, our eternity is secure.
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

WORLD NEWS
Dial for Peace
The U.S. and Iran are taking another rain check on peace talks.
President Trump canceled diplomats’ trip to Pakistan this weekend after receiving an insufficient offer from Iran, saying the travel wasn’t worth it for deals that are “not good enough.” POTUS said Sunday that “they can call us,” adding that further peace talks would happen over the phone. Officials say the parties are still oceans apart on opening the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear program.
In an effort to squeeze Iran economically, Uncle Sam imposed fresh sanctions Friday on a major oil refinery in China, along with 40 transporters of Iranian oil.
Peace progress is tenuous in Lebanon, too. Israel hit Hezbollah with a series of strikes Saturday—two days after their ceasefire with Lebanon was extended by three weeks—aiming to eliminate rocket launchers and “immediate threats.”

PRAY WITH US
Sovereign Lord of Hosts, patch back together this unraveling peace. Sew harmony and goodwill, turning wayward hearts to Yourself. Pick out any evil, underhanded stitches so they don’t threaten the whole. Strengthen and reinforce worn-out leaders.
As long as we fragile, fickle mortals are involved, we know that peace will always be temporary. But You are weaving a peace that cannot be shredded or ripped or unraveled, which will blanket the whole universe. World leaders can only offer a maybe-now truce, but You promise a now-and-forever shalom that our rebel hearts can’t ruin. Until Your kingdom comes, work peace across these lands and in the hearts of those who call them home.
Burdensome news often leaves us overwhelmed and speechless. Praying the News, TPO’s Saturday afternoon newsletter, turns our groans into psalmic prayers every week. Join us in prayer.

Picks Are In
The NFL welcomed 257 new faces this weekend.
The 2026 NFL draft wrapped up in Pittsburgh Saturday with a record 800,000+ fans celebrating the selections over three days (see how analysts rank each team’s picks). The Raiders kicked off the offseason’s Super Bowl by taking Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, and the Jets snagged outside linebacker David Bailey. With the third pick, Arizona more-than-liked Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, making him just the third top-three running back selected since 2012.
59 passcatchers (WRs and TEs) snagged roster spots, the most since the NFL moved to a seven-round format in 1994.
The Denver Broncos made University at Buffalo linebacker Red Murdock this year’s Mr. Irrelevant—the bittersweet moniker given to the draft’s final pick—who set an FBS record with 17 career forced fumbles.
Verse to consider whether you’re picked first, picked last, or still waiting for your moment: “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:8-10 (CSB) (read full passage)
IN OTHER BREWS…
A single city in Gaza held elections on Saturday. Deir al-Balah, a city less damaged by war, hosted the Strip’s first voting since 2006. Hamas guarded the polls but wasn’t on the ballot, and suspected Hamas allies won two of 15 seats; Palestinian Authority candidates won 6, and they swept simultaneous West Bank elections. Despite ~23% turnout, officials celebrated Gaza’s “first step” forward.
The feds have stopped investigating the Fed. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced Friday the DOJ is closing its criminal probe into Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s handling of the central bank’s multi-billion dollar renovations, handing the matter to the inspector general. The news clears the path for the Senate to confirm President Trump’s pick, Kevin Warsh, to the chairman’s seat.
Meta and Microsoft announced a combined 20,000 potential job cuts. Thursday, the social media giant said it’s unfriending 10% of its global workforce, while Microsoft announced its first-ever employee buyouts, covering roughly 8,750 U.S. employees. The companies are redirecting billions into AI infrastructure, leaving some economists worried about an AI-driven labor crisis.
A massive tornado tore through Enid, Oklahoma, Thursday night, injuring at least 10 and damaging 40+ homes. The twister (see footage) forced Vance Air Force Base to close due to damage and was part of a reported 18-tornado outbreak across Oklahoma, Iowa, and Kansas. Despite the expansive damage, Enid's mayor was "grateful" there were no fatalities.
A U.S. special forces soldier has been arrested for using classified information to win $409K on Polymarket. The soldier allegedly placed a $33K bet that Venezuela’s then-President Maduro would be removed from office days before the U.S. military’s raid. The suspiciously-timed wager fueled bipartisan calls to regulate prediction markets. Polymarket says the arrest is “proof the [current] system works.”

How I’m Starting Every Day
With The Worship Initiative’s Sing Devotional*
I am no musician (#notachurchchoirgal), but I do love to sing. Actually, few things help me focus on the goodness of God more than a rich worship song. That’s why The Worship Initiative’s Sing devotional has become my favorite addition to my quiet time.
Sing brings Sunday morning worship into my everyday life. Each devotional helps me experience and remember truth by breaking down a song and weaving it together with Scripture. It’s a simple daily rhythm that roots God’s Word deep in my heart.
God designed us to sing. Sign up with your phone number, and they’ll text you a free devo link every morning. Let’s praise God together today!
