Happy Monday!
A good Samaritan in Arkansas helped a man in a wheelchair cross six lanes of traffic last week… dressed as Spiderman.

Fresh off a super-hero-themed party, the friendly neighborhood 20-year-old jumped out of his Jeep, swung ran to help the man to the crosswalk, and proved you don’t need superpowers to make someone’s day (and that costumes are always a good idea).

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“God doesn’t want our success; He wants us. He doesn’t demand our achievements; He demands our obedience.”

European Wildfires

More than 330,000 people have been evacuated, and three have died, as erratic winds and extreme temps stoke wildfires in France and Spain.

Two firefighters died battling one of France’s worst fires ever near the city of Bordeaux; the blaze has already burned 42,000 hectares (for non-metric-systemers: 1 hectare = 2.5 acres). More than 220,000 people have been evacuated from southwestern France, marking one of its largest evacuation efforts since World War II.

Sunday’s Tour de France finale in Paris was shortened so authorities could redeploy to help firefighters.

In Spain, officials confirmed a man died in his car in the town of Manises, while responders battled to keep two fires west of Madrid (Spain’s capital) from merging. Spain declared a state of emergency Friday, with PM Sánchez warning of “complex times ahead.”

PRAY WITH US
God of the Displaced, gather the French and Spanish people to yourself. Wrap your loving arms around them, providing for what’s been taken and healing where they’ve been hurt. The road to recovery is long; this wildfire has left an angry wound that may take years to heal. Shore up first responders, weary from the battle, to continue fighting flames and searching for the missing. Spur your people to radical love and hospitality. For those with nothing left to rebuild, may your church be a refuge and stronghold, offering safety to the suffering and hope to the hopeless. Amen.

Jason and TPO writer Katherine Anne are leading a 5-minute guided prayer over wildfires in today’s edition of Praying the News (PTN). Sign up here, we’ll text you.

Cockroaches Declare Victory

Protesters hung up their signs Saturday after one of the biggest dissent movements in India’s recent history.

The Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), formed after India’s top judge called unemployed youth “cockroaches”, spearheaded demonstrations over education reform, youth unemployment, and government crackdowns. Protesters demanded the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a key ally of PM Modi who they say didn’t do enough to stop leaked college entrance exams, including a fiercely competitive medical school test leak that forced millions of retakes and was linked to 20+ student suicides.

Pradhan resigned Saturday, saying he was “deeply pained” by recent events but didn’t want “anti-national forces” to benefit from protests. The CJP said, “Cockroaches won. Democracy won!” after Modi’s government promised amnesty for protesters, exam reform, and compensation for families whose students died by suicide.

Verse to consider whether you get what you’ve been asking for or are still waiting… “Trust in the LORD and do what is good; dwell in the land and live securely. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act, making your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday. Be silent before the LORD and wait expectantly for him; do not be agitated by one who prospers in his way, by the person who carries out evil plans.

On Hold

Peace talks between the U.S. and Iran are on again.

Saturday was the first night in nearly two weeks that the United States did not strike Iran, saying operations were “on hold.” VP Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine reportedly raised concerns about Uncle Sam’s shrinking munitions stockpiles to President Trump on Friday, a day after POTUS said he was considering a “massive attack, bigger than ever before.”

The White House said Trump was keeping “all options” open but “prefers a diplomatic solution.”

Meanwhile, #47’s tariff war began another phase Friday, with fresh double-digit import taxes on goods from 80 countries that allegedly failed to prohibit the use of forced labor. Multiple lawsuits attempting to block the tariffs have already been filed.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
There may seem to be good reasons to be worried about this day, month, or year. God does not promise good days, but He promises a great eternity. Stay focused on eternity, it changes everything.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

IN OTHER BREWS…

One person died and at least 29 others were injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd at Berlin’s Pride event Saturday. A minivan rammed pedestrians in Tiergarten park before the driver attacked people with a blade and fled. German police shot and killed a suspect with alleged Islamist ties yesterday after he reportedly charged officers with a knife during arrest.

South Carolinian Democrats are expected to move to the front of the voter line. The Democratic National Committee’s rules panel recommended Friday that the Palmetto State (credited for reviving Biden’s 2020 campaign) hold the first 2028 presidential primary for their party, followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, and New Mexico. Iowans are expected to continue to vote first in the Republican primaries.

Take two: President Trump got his White House Correspondents’ Association dinner redo Friday. He joked about a third term, jabbed at reporters and cabinet members, and thanked the law enforcement who responded to the April 25th shooter who derailed the first event. Trump boycotted the president-and-press dinner throughout his first term, making Friday his first-ever address to the crowd.

It’s a moist heat across the central U.S. this week. An expanding heat dome* has ~80M from Dallas to North Dakota under heat advisories, with temps 10-15 degrees above average and the humidity to match. Overnight temps won’t bring much relief, and forecasters expect the record-setting weather to hang around all week. *Scratching your (sweaty) head about heat domes? We’ve got you.

LeBron is taking his talents to Philadelphia. After a stutter-step toward retirement, King James spun right with an announcement Friday: “I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.” The 41-year-old’s “last decision” is a two-year, $8M contract with the Philadelphia 76ers; James is shooting for a fifth championship in his record-extending 24th season.

Raspberry LMNT*

My wife, Hannah, likes to swing by the TPO office with the girls. Well… sorta.

They’re both under 3, and they actually just stay in the car while Hannah texts me to “bring a box of Raspberry LMNT out.”

I’m not at all suggesting she’s addicted to Raspberry LMNT, but it does feel a little bit like it… she’s just gotta have that healthy hydration (a science-backed ratio of sodium, magnesium, and potassium).

And now, LMNT has caffeinated Lemonade Iced Tea to try! When you buy through this link, you’ll get a free 8-pack of LMNT’s most popular drink mix flavors. Happy hydrating!
