Ballot Bust

Monday, the Department of Justice charged 28 California green card holders with illegally voting or registering to vote.

Eleven have been arrested for allegedly lying about their citizenship to register; arrests of the remaining 17 are expected soon. The 28 were among 20,000 people flagged as “likely noncitizens” by the DOJ, which filed a lawsuit to stop California from counting their ballots until immigration statuses are confirmed (see how the DOJ says it built the list).

California AG Bonta (D) said the DOJ has provided “no evidence” of ineligible voters, calling the cases “a drop in the bucket” among the Golden State’s 23M registered voters; Uncle Sam’s Acting Deputy AG McCotter accused the state of facilitating voter fraud, saying it damages “real elections.”

The DOJ says it’s charged 113 individuals across 20 states with similar offenses as part of its “Operation Protect the Vote.”

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE
There is no election or immigration policy that can shake the kingdom of God. Care for your current home and neighbors while focusing ultimately on our eternal home, a city whose walls keep out injustice and whose gates are always open.

“Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God.”

Welcome Backsketball

The NBA season tipped off last night.

Before the jump, New York got new big-and-shiny championship Knick-knacks and raised Madison Square Garden’s first NBA-title banner since 1973 (see it go up). Then the sneakers got squeakin’, and the 76ers ruined NY’s party, nixing the Knicks in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown’s Philly debut. In a Western finals rematch and clash of title favorites, the Thunder struck the Spurs.

Hoops fans hope the Association’s new anti-tanking rules will make losing on purpose less appealing by tweaking draft lottery odds and capping teams at two years of top-five picks.

As one season begins, MLB nears its end. The Rays beat the Guardians Monday to win the AL pennant and set up a World Series with the 103-win Brewers, guaranteeing a first-time Fall Classic winner; Game 1 is Friday in Milwaukee.

CHOOSE HUMILITY
Believers celebrate excellence, teamwork, and perseverance, but we don’t define greatness by scoreboards or record books. The MVPs in God’s kingdom are the humble who depend on Him and serve others sacrificially.

“If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.” He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but him who sent me.”
Mark 9:35-37 (CSB) (read full passage)

WORLD NEWS

Not Tod’eh

The Canadian province of Alberta is stickin’ with Mother Maple.

On Monday, roughly ¾ of Albertans voted to keep singing “O Canada,” rejecting a referendum measure to begin the “legal process required” to consider independence. Canadian PM Carney praised Albertans for the “great result” of choosing “unity,” saying the vote allows Canada to “move forward together” on efforts to diversify trade and make Canada a global energy powerhouse.

Alberta’s separatists see things differently.

They argue that federal policies have stifled Canada’s fourth-largest province (specifically its oil and gas industries) and that Alberta’s conservative majority is underrepresented in Ottawa. They say Monday’s vote shows “at least a quarter of Albertans” are unhappy, giving more legitimacy to a movement that was considered fringe just a few years ago.

Verse to consider whether you’re contemplating a big change or trying to maintain the status quo… “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight. Don’t be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil.”
Proverbs 3:5-7 (CSB) (read full passage)

IN OTHER BREWS…

Ten Israelis accused of violence in the West Bank were arrested Monday. During a Palestinian olive harvest Friday, masked settlers beat and severely injured American photojournalist Heidi Levine, then attacked a group of European diplomats Saturday. Human rights groups say this year’s olive harvest has seen a surge of violence; Israel’s police promised “equal and impartial law enforcement.”

France is imposing curfews to quell riots. Nationwide protests over school conditions and living costs drew 500,000+ Saturday, escalating when masked rioters joined marches. Over 3,000 businesses were damaged, a town hall burned to ruins, and 2,500+ people arrested (see the intense riots). PM Lecornu accused “ultra-left” groups of orchestrating “profound disorder” ahead of April’s presidential election; right-wing populist leaders criticized officials’ crime-enforcement failures.

The Land of the Rising Sun launched a Mars moon mission Monday. The Japan-led, $578M project will drop a rover on Phobos in 2029, then the mothership will touch down twice in 2030 to collect soil samples. Due back earthside in 2031, it’d be the first Mars system souvenir, possibly revealing whether Phobos is a captured asteroid or impact debris (marvel at the Mars-moon-mission’s map).

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour is signing off after 43 years. The chief international anchor announced Monday she’ll scale back air time before her weekly show ends in May. The 68-year-old’s farewell, for which she gave no reason, follows the network’s acquisition by Skydance, whose management of CBS faced criticism. CNN’s CEO called Amanpour “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere.” Watch the children-of-war coverage that made her famous.

The White House has new doctor’s orders for women’s health. Monday, President Trump signed an executive order creating an NIH division and White House task force focused on researching conditions like endometriosis and Alzheimer’s. First Lady Melania Trump, a symbolic co-signer, hopes it’ll end “generations of silence.” Women’s health groups welcomed it and want “robust and sustained funding,” which remains undetermined.

How We’re Not Paying Interest
With a 0% intro APR card*

Here's the math nobody spells out: a $5,000 balance + 20% APR = a big chunk of your payments melting into interest before touching what you owe.

Let’s simplify the equation. When you move your balance to a 0% intro APR card, your whole payment goes toward your balance. Your same money but actual progress.

FinanceBuzz’s experts put together a list of cards offering 0% APR for over a year (that gets you into 2028). The top pick has no annual fees, a $200 welcome bonus, and 5% cash back on purchases you’re already making.
