UPS Plane Crash

A fiery plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky, has left at least 13 people dead, 15 injured, and nine still unaccounted for.

The UPS cargo plane was departing Muhammad Ali International Airport Tuesday evening, loaded with 38,000 gallons of fuel for its Honolulu-bound flight, when its left wing caught fire and one of its three engines fell off. The 34-year-old aircraft struck multiple businesses before landing in a massive fireball, spreading the blaze nearly a mile into a nearby industrial area (see the crash path).

Louisville’s Worldport, the largest UPS air cargo hub, suspended operations through Wednesday, and a shelter-in-place was issued as far as Southern Indiana.

The plane’s black box has been recovered, but investigators are still probing the crash’s cause. Authorities are still searching for those missing, but survivors are not expected.

PRAY WITH US
Heavenly Father, our hearts are hurting for the city of Louisville. Great Comforter, You are well-acquainted with our deepest griefs; be near to those who are mourning. Faithful Rescuer, bring home those who are still missing. Wise Counselor, give knowledge and discernment to first responders, investigators, leaders, and authorities.

Our Sovereign God, remind us that even the most tragic accidents are not outside Your hand. We weep, knowing this world is not as it should be. Help us remember that death and destruction do not have the last word. Strengthen our weary hearts as we pursue You today and await tomorrow’s restoration. Amen.

Tariffs in the Balance

Lady Justice has President Trump’s tariffs in her balance scale in one of the weightiest political-economic cases in decades.

POTUS’s global taxes came before SCOTUS in a two-and-a-half-hour hearing Wednesday, and the noble nine seemed skeptical of the tariffs’ legal basis. The Trump administration argues that the sweeping levies are authorized by 1977 emergency powers allowing the president to regulate imports without Congress’s go-ahead. A group of businesses and Democratic states say Trump exceeded his authority, and lower courts largely agreed.

If the Supremes overturn Uncle Sam’s tariffs, he’ll have to refund the ~$90B in revenue collected so far this year and will have less trade talk leverage.

President Trump said he “heard the case went well” and that it’s “life or death for our country.” A decision is expected in the new year.

Verse to consider whether your economic prospects are rock solid or hanging on by a thread… “Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food… yet I will celebrate in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! The LORD my Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like those of a deer and enables me to walk on mountain heights!”

Election Reactions

The effects of Election Day are ripplin’.

Democrats are celebrating Tuesday night’s blue wave—including governorships in Virginia and New Jersey, key statewide races in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and major redistricting in California that's expected to add five additional Democratic House seats next year. On Wednesday, California Republicans promptly filed suit to block the newly approved map, arguing it unfairly favors Democrats.

President Trump said the results are a setback for Republicans and blamed the ongoing government shutdown. He argued “we have to get the country open” by changing Senate rules to allow a simple majority (51 votes) to end the filibuster—but not enough Republicans are interested in "going nuclear" yet. Majority Leader Thune (R-SD) said, "I know where the math is on this issue in the Senate, and it's not happening.”

CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
During any election season, it’s easy to see the shortcomings of our opponents and cast ourselves in the right. When we find ourselves grumbling about others, we must remember to check our own hearts.

“Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.”

IN OTHER BREWS…

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is signing off after 40 years in Congress. The 85-year-old former House Speaker, still one of Congress’s most influential Democrats, announced yesterday that she won’t seek reelection for her San Francisco seat. Pelosi said there’s “been no greater honor” than speaking for San Fran; President Trump celebrated her retirement as “a great thing for America.”

That’s Sir David Beckham to you. The soccer legend/FC exec/Posh Spice’s husband was knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle Tuesday in a ceremony Beckham called his “proudest moment” (see the sword-tapping here). Beckham was recognized for his contributions to sports, helping bring the 2012 Olympics to London, and serving charities including UNICEF and The King’s Foundation.

Flyers, don’t forget to pack your patience. The FAA will trim air traffic up to 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets starting today to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. The move aims to manage staffing shortages as unpaid air traffic controllers—some now working second jobs to pay the bills—call out of work, potentially causing nationwide delays.

Asia’s strongest storm of the year just slammed the Philippines and Vietnam. Typhoon Kalmaegi killed at least 114 people and left 127 missing in the Philippines before blowing through Vietnam yesterday, where wind speeds over 100mph whipped up 30-foot waves (track its path here). The typhoon forced mass evacuations, airport closures, and fears of long-term agricultural damage across Southeast Asia.

Japan’s military has been beary busy. The country deployed Self-Defense Forces to its rugged north on Wednesday to help trap bears after a sixfold surge in encounters—over 8,000 sightings. Attacks have injured more than 100 people and killed at least 12 since April. Captured bears will be handed over to officials as part of population-control efforts.
