BUSINESS

The Oracle of Omaha

Warren Buffett will step down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at year’s end after 60 years at the helm.

The 94-year-old Omaha native took over a struggling textile company in 1965 and turned it into a $1.16T conglomerate, amassing a personal fortune of $168B along the way. Buffett is beloved for his folksy, common-sense financial wisdom and philanthropy—he’s donated over $58B throughout the years and pledged to give away 99% of his fortune.

Buffett said he will “hang around,” but is giving the final say on all company operations and investment decisions to 62-year-old Greg Abel.

Abel has worked for Berkshire for 25 years, rising through the ranks. Now he’ll be in charge of its portfolio of 200+ companies, including GEICO, Dairy Queen, and significant stock holdings of public companies like Apple and Coca-Cola.

CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
Whether your portfolio is Buffett-sized, tumbling, or nonexistent, remember: you won’t bring your earthly treasures to heaven. Keep your focus on the Giver of good gifts, steward money wisely, and share generously with others.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.”

Sovereignty Reins

Journalism was favored, but Sovereignty took the crown at the 151st Kentucky Derby. (Great names. Great. Names.)

This year’s field made history as all 19 horses descended from legendary thoroughbred Secretariat. The equine family reunion was rainy but exciting; Sovereignty trailed until the final, muddy turn, pulling ahead to earn a blanket of 554 red roses and $3.1M for his owners, breeders, trainers, and jockey.

It was Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado’s first Derby win (after six appearances) and the second for trainer Bill Mott, whose Country House won in 2019 after the initial winner was disqualified. There’s no time to horse around, though. If Sovereignty is competing for the Triple Crown, the next race—the Preakness Stakes—is just 12 days away.

Verse to consider whether your favorite horse won, lost… or you’d really rather read a good book… “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

U.S. NEWS

Snip, Slash, Sign

President Trump is breaking out the shears.

On Friday, the White House proposed pruning $163B from Uncle Sam’s 2026 budget by slashing spending on healthcare, education, housing, environmental programs, foreign aid, and medical research, including 40%+ cuts to the National Institutes of Health and CDC. Not everything would shrink—border security spending would jump 65%, and defense spending would get a temporary one-year 13% boost.

The proposal faces an uphill battle in Congress, which ultimately sets the budget. Democrats call cuts too extreme, while key Republicans say defense spending needs a sustained increase.

Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order attempting to halt federal funding for NPR and PBS, accusing them of partisan bias and calling government-funded news “outdated and unnecessary.” The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has sued, arguing only Congress can control the networks’ funding.

CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE
Believers may disagree about how governments should spend taxpayer dollars, but the command for followers of Jesus’s funds is crystal clear: prioritize heavenly treasure, generously help the needy, and run from greed. Are you rich toward God in your spending habits?

“But seek his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

IN OTHER BREWS…

Without a star, you won’t get far (probably). Starting Wednesday, travelers must show a REAL ID—or another approved document, like a passport—to board domestic flights or enter secure federal buildings. If your license lacks the little star in the upper right corner, expect extra screening or denied entry. Check your state’s requirements and how to get a REAL ID here.

President Trump is threatening to have the IRS un-exempt Harvard, doubling down on last month’s threats during the $2B funding freeze face-off. Most public and private colleges are tax-exempt, but Trump wants Harvard taxed as a “political entity” for allegedly pushing political ideology. Harvard’s president said the “highly illegal” move would diminish the school’s educational, research, and economic contributions.

The NBA’s all-time-winningest coach is putting away his whiteboard. San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich—who led the Spurs to 1,400+ wins and five NBA Championships over 29 seasons—stepped back Friday to become the team’s president. Assistant Coach Mitch Johnson, who’s been calling the shots since the 76-year-old Popovich suffered a stroke in November, was officially tapped for head coach.

Immigration enforcement continues to draw national attention. ICE admitted to wrongly raiding the Oklahoma home of U.S. citizens—the intended targets had moved out two weeks earlier. Meanwhile, a federal judge ruled the Trump Admin cannot use the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members, saying the wartime law only applies when an “organized, armed force” enters the U.S.

Welcome to anyone reading from Starbase, Texas. On Saturday, the 283 eligible voters living in the 1.5 square miles around SpaceX’s facility and launch site in the southern tip of Texas voted overwhelmingly to incorporate as a city (most are SpaceX employees). CEO Elon Musk celebrated the news, which may ease the regulatory hurdles of rocket launches.
